  13. - Improved Audio Quality
  14.   This version of Internet Phone lets you select one of three audio quality modes:
  15.  
  16.    1. Standard Audio Quality for 14.4K connection - using a bandwidth of 10.5k bit/sec.
  17.       (Same as version 3.0 quality).
  18.    2. High Audio Quality for 14.4K connection - using a bandwidth of 12.5k bit/sec.
  19.    3. High Audio Quality for 28.8K connection using a bandwidth of 15.3k bit/sec.
  20.  
  21. Select the audio quality mode from the Quality menu. 
  22. You can change the audio quality only before starting a call.
  23.  
  24. If you are using an 28.8K connection choose the High Audio Quality for 28.8K mode 
  25. for having a smaller delay and a better handling of lost packets.
  26. If you have a poor connection or slow computer and get bad results using the
  27. High Quality mode, choose the Standard Audio Quality mode.
  28.  
  29. Please note that the actual conversation quality depends on both parties, 
  30. Internet Phone will switch both users to the mode using less bandwidth. 
  31. For example, if one party chooses Standard Quality and the other selects 
  32. High Quality, Standard Quality will be used.  
  33.  
  34. The conversation quality is indicated by the IN and OUT indicators which will
  35. flash with green for Standard Quality, yellow for 14.4K High Quality and
  36. cyan for 28.8K High Quality.
  37.  
  38. When talking to people who have older versions of Internet Phone the Standard Quality
  39. will be used (you can see the remote user build number by selecting
  40. the User Info option in the Options menu. If you see that it is older than
  41. build 20 you can advise him or her to download the new version...)
  42.  
  43. The default quality when running Internet Phone for the first
  44. time is the Standard Quality.
  45.  
  46. -  Internet Phone on the World Wide Web
  47.    This version of Internet Phone lets you make calls to Internet Phone 
  48. users from within a Web browser (This feature was checked to work with 
  49. Netscape and Microsoft's Internet Explorer. It may not work with other 
  50. browsers).
  51.    You can add standard hypertext links to Internet Phone users or topics 
  52. in Web pages. When you choose such a link in a Web browser, the Web 
  53. browser automatically runs Internet Phone, which connects to a server and 
  54. starts a call to the user.
  55.   Internet Phone maintains a local HTML file (IPHONE.HTM, located in the 
  56. Internet Phone directory) to which you can add links to any Internet Phone 
  57. user. This file serves as a sort of private phone-book, which you can 
  58. access from within Internet Phone or from your Web browser. Adding new 
  59. links to this file is simple: choose a Quick Dial button using the right 
  60. mouse button and choose "Save HTML Link" from the pop-up menu. This adds 
  61. to the IPHONE.HTM file a new link to the user listed under the Quick Dial 
  62. button (by setting a button that holds your own name, you can save an HTML 
  63. link to yourself). To add such links to other HTML files, simply cut and 
  64. paste them from the IPHONE.HTM file to the desired file.
  65.    This feature finally integrates the Internet Phone and the World Wide 
  66. Web. At last, you can add an Internet Phone link to your Home Page. Users 
  67. that surf the net can now contact you directly! Phone-books or user lists 
  68. can be compiled on the Web. Organizations can now provide information, 
  69. service or support, directly from within their Web site (for such a 
  70. purpose, it is probably better to add a link to a topic - even to a 
  71. private one - instead of to a specific user). These are only some of the 
  72. many possibilities that this feature opens to Internet users.

  74. For more information on using this feature, choose "Search for Help On" 
  75. from the Internet Phone Help menu, type "Web" and open the corresponding 
  76. topic.

  78. -  Toolbox mode
  79.    Another feature provided by this version of the software is the ability 
  80. to turn the Internet Phone into a compact toolbox. This allows you to 
  81. easily use Internet Phone while using other applications, without wasting 
  82. precious desktop space.

  84. For more information on using this feature, choose "Search for Help On" 
  85. from the Internet Phone HELP menu, type "toolbox" and open the 
  86. corresponding topic.

  88. -  Improved Preferences control
  89. The Preferences dialog box has changed to provide better control of
  90. the audio format used by the Internet Phone.

  92. In order to use Internet Phone, you need...

  95. 1. Windows 3.1 or higher.
  96.  
  97. 2. 8MB of RAM recommended.

  99. 3. 486SX 25Mhz or faster recommended.
  100.    For full-duplex conversation, a 486 50MHz is required.
  101.    The high quality audio mode requires more CPU power than the
  102.    standard audio quality mode.
  103.  
  104. 4. Windows compatible audio board, with speaker and microphone.
  105.    For full-duplex conversation, a full-duplex audio card or two different
  106.    audio cards are required, and we recommend, for the full duplex mode, an
  107.    earphone rather than a speaker. See http://www.vocaltec.com for an

  110. 5. TCP/IP software with WINSOCK 1.1 support.

  112. 6. A SLIP/PPP, or direct Internet connection (14,400 baud minimum).

  117. Installing the Internet Phone
  118. -----------------------------
  119.  
  120. 1. Make sure that your microphone and speaker work properly,
  121.    by recording yourself using the Microsoft's Sound Recorder.
  122.    
  123. 2. Execute the self-extracting archive IPHONE18.EXE
  124.  
  125. 3. Choose File/Run and execute C:\IPHONE\SETUP
  126.    A new program-manager group file will be created, with icons for The
  127.    Internet Phone and Help file
  128.  
  129. 4. Double-click the Internet Phone / Internet Wave icon.
  130.  
  131. 5. The first time you run the Internet Phone Software, a Quick Tour will
  132.    be suggested to you.
  133.  
  134. 6. Start talking with the rest of the world!

  138. Setting up for Full-Duplex Conversation
  139. ---------------------------------------
  140.  
  141. 1. You must have a full-duplex audio card, or two different normal
  142.    (half-duplex) audio cards in order to use full-duplex mode.
  143.  
  144. 2. Make sure that the modem compression and (possibly) error 
  145.    correction is turned off. See "Modem Settings" below.
  146.  
  147. 3. The Internet Phone will test your system performance and its
  148.    capacity for Full-duplex support on the first time you run
  149.    the new version. If you use two audio cards you will be asked to
  150.    specify which one to use for speaking and which one for listening.
  151.    Choose Preferences from the Options menu to change those settings in the Preference dialog box.

  153.    Full-duplex mode will not be set if your system does not have a
  154.    full-duplex audio card, or two audio cards.
  155.  
  156. 4. Choose "Full Duplex" from the tool bar or from Options menu.
  157.  
  158. 5. When starting a conversation, the bottom status line will show you
  159.    the connection mode:
  160.  
  161.     - Full Duplex - both sides are using full-duplex mode. Both sides
  162.     can talk and listen at the same time.
  163.  
  164.     - Local FDX - your system is in full-duplex mode, but the remote
  165.     system is only half duplex. The conversation will be half
  166.     duplex, but you will be able to break into your partner's
  167.     speech.
  168.  
  169.     - Remote FDX - your system is set up for half-duplex operation,
  170.     and remote system is set for full-duplex operation.

  172.     - Speak/Listen - Normal half-duplex display.

  176. Problems using Full-Duplex Conversation
  177. ---------------------------------------
  178.  
  179. The most obvious problem with full-duplex conversation is acoustic
  180. feedback. It is strongly recommended to use full-duplex mode with a headset.
  181. Alternately, try lowering the speaker volume, and put it as far as possible
  182. from the microphone.
  183.  
  184. Improper setting of your full-duplex configuration, might interfere with
  185. your partner's speech: If a half-duplex user is calling you, and your
  186. voice-activation is set too low, every time his speech is heard in the
  187. speaker, it might trigger your system to start transmitting. Since your
  188. partner's system is half-duplex, it will stop speaking and start hearing
  189. what you're transmitting to him - his own speech!

  193. Removing the Internet Phone
  194. ---------------------------

  196. If you installed the Internet Phone, and wish to remove it, or even
  197. just to re-locate it in another directory, do the
  198. following:
  199.  
  200. 1. Load the file WIN.INI into a text editor (e.g. NOTEPAD)
  201.  
  202. 2. Locate the "[Sounds]" section
  203.  
  204. 3. Inside that section, remove all "Internet Phone" sounds.
  205.  
  206. 4. If you then run the Internet Phone again, it will re-install its
  207.    sound files from its new current directory.
  208.  
  209. 5. If you relocate the Internet Phone without removing these entries,
  210.    you'll notice that the indication sounds (busy, ringing, etc) are
  211.    gone.

  216. About The Internet Phone Network
  217. --------------------------------
  218.  
  219. The Internet Phone uses the Internet Phone Servers Network to show 
  220. the currently on-line users. The actual conversation is performed 
  221. directly between the PC's running the Internet Phone, and not via the 
  222. servers.
  223.  
  224. To get the latest list of servers, get the file IRCSRVRS.INI from
  225. the FTP site:
  226.     ftp.vocaltec.com /pub
  227. or from our WEB site
  228.     http://www.vocaltec.com/net.html
  229.  
  230. and copy it into your local C:\IPHONE directory.

  235. Selecting a Server
  236. ------------------
  237.  
  238. In order to use the Internet Phone, you must be connected to an Internet
  239. Phone Server, which uses the IRC protocol.
  240.  
  241. When you first run the Internet Phone, You have to choose an Internet Phone
  242. Server from the list of Internet Phone Servers. You can select a different
  243. server anytime you like.
  244.  
  245. It is better to select the server nearest to you. However, there isn't any
  246. difference which server you connect to: All servers hold an updated list
  247. of all Internet Phone users.
  248.  
  249. Once you're connected to the network, you can call any other Internet
  250. Phone user that is connected to the Internet Phone network. There is no
  251. need for both of you to use the same Internet Phone Server.
  252.  
  253. Please note that  by  "nearest"  we  mean  over  the  net,  but  usually
  254. geographically close places have a better network connection.
  255.  
  256. It is possible to connect to IRC servers outside the Internet Phone
  257. network. In this case, you will be able to talk only with Internet Phone
  258. users using the same network.

  267. 1. Choose Troubleshooting from the Help menu in the Internet Phone window.
  268.    It contains a list of problems and solutions.

  270. 2. Look at the technical support page on our Web server:

  273. 3. Select "Technical Support" from the Help menu for information on how
  274.    to contact VocalTec.

  278. Modem Settings
  279. --------------
  280.  
  281. The modem initialization string should be changed to allow faster transfer:
  282.  
  283. 1. You should add the characters "%C0\N1" to the string to disable data 
  284.    compression and error corrections. 
  285.    It is possible that different modems will use different AT commands.
  286.    If your modem does not response correctly to the above commands
  287.    you should look for the AT command table in your modem documentation
  288.    for the right commands.
  289.    
  290. 2. To edit the initialization string in Netmanage Chameleon you can
  291.    enter setup/modem/initialize and add the above characters to the string.
  292.  
  293. 3. In Trumpet you can edit your "login.cmd" script. Look for the line:
  294.    "$modemsetup = "&C1..." and add the above characters to the string.
  295.  
  296. 4. If you are using some other TCP/IP software as your Internet connection, 
  297.    Try to find out the way to edit the modem initialization string.
